Jubilee Storehouse – a food bank in Aberystwyth

It might seem unbelievable in 21st Century Wales that anyone would be unable to afford  to buy food for themselves or their family. But it does happen. These days a third of families do not have any savings and rely entirely on the money coming in week by week. So if something happens to stop that income then a crisis can quickly result. All it takes is a sudden unexpected event such as a bereavement, illness, redundancy, relationship breakdown, benefit delay or theft. And it can happen to all sorts of people. In our communities there are those living on the edge of poverty, and they are particularly vulnerable. Other people are relatively prosperous yet can be tipped into crisis by these unexpected events. For those who experience these problems the results can be devastating, and unless the crisis is resolved quickly, health issues, strain on relationships and debt (and all that involves) may develop.

When a crisis happens Jubilee Storehouse immediately steps in with a supply of food and other necessities, enough for three days, while the underlying issues are tackled. And we offer a hand of friendship if that’s appropriate. Jubilee Storehouse is a ministry of St Anne’s church in Penparcau and was a response to our purpose of ‘serving the community’. Clearly there is a local need and nationally there are now dozens of well used food banks. This problem is undoubtedly rural as well as urban and, as government cuts and changes to the benefits system take hold, it is going to become much worse. The project operates through voucher holders who are professionals in agencies and organisations working with people in all sorts of difficulties.

Examples are Citizen’s Advice, West Wales Women’s Aid, Housing Associations, Social Services, and Ceredigion Care Society etc. These are people who have the experience to accurately assess people’s needs and that gives us confidence that the need for emergency food is genuine. Our expectation is that the referring agency will help the person resolve their immediate crisis and generally this should take only a few days. The role of a food bank is to provide help in a crisis. By far the greatest number of cases result from problems with benefits, and these problems are usually quickly resolved. We do not see Jubilee Storehouse as having a role where people are experiencing long term problems with their finances. However, we do point such people to those who can help and as a church we give support that is within our expertise and resources.

Jubilee Storehouse helps a wide range of people. Here are some examples: An elderly man discharged from hospital to a house with no food and not well enough to go out shopping. A teenager coming out of care and living in managed accommodation whose Job Seeker Allowance was stopped because she had hurt her knee and so was not capable of working. A woman forced to flee her home because of domestic violence. And an ex-soldier struggling with civilian life, without a job and caught by a government policy that dictates benefits are stopped whenever circumstances change and benefits need to be reassessed. We started Jubilee Storehouse at Easter 2011 and our first client was helped that Good Friday. Since then (as of mid January 2013) we have assisted 292 people, redeemed 185 vouchers and have 35 voucher holders. Food is donated by local churches and individuals living in the Aberystwyth area who have caught the vision of the project.

Christmas views please

Aberystwyth & Penparcau Town Council have set up a working group to review the Christmas arrangements for the town in preparartion for 2013.  We are very interested in any ideas such as: –

– Should we have a more sustainable Christmas with less lights?

– Should traders and external businesses contribute towards the lights?

– Was the tree too big?

– Were the events held sufficiently publicised?

If you have any views regarding this, please contact merbala@hotmail.com.

Araith Leanne Wood

Bydd arweinydd Plaid Cymru Leanne Wood yn ceisio enwebiad ei phlaid am etholaeth y Rhondda yn etholiadau’r Cynulliad yn 2016.

Gwnaeth Ms Wood, gafodd ei geni a’i magu yn y Rhondda ac sy’n dal i fyw yno, ei chyhoeddiad yn ystod araith i nodi blwyddyn ers cael ei dewis i arwain ei phlaid.

Bydd yn awr yn ceisio enwebiad fel ymgeisydd dros y Rhondda gan yr aelodau lleol cyn cwblhau’r broses ddewis yn yr etholaeth yr haf yma.

Yn ystod ei haraith yn Adeilad y Pierhead, dan nawdd Canolfan Llywodraethiant Cymru, fe ddywedodd: “Dechreuais y ddarlith hon trwy eich atgoffa mai fy mhrif flaenoriaeth, ers cael f’ethol yn arweinydd Plaid Cymru, fu’r economi a swyddi. Mae rheswm pam fy mod eisiau gwneud yr economi a swyddi yn ganolbwynt. Dro ar ôl tro, mae pobl mewn cymunedau ledled Cymru wedi cael eu taro’n galed gan un llywodraeth y DG ar ôl y llall. Ond does unman yn debyg i gartre; dyna sy’n ein ffurfio. O gael fy magu lle cefais i, yn y Rhondda, bûm yn dyst uniongyrchol i hyn.

Fe dyfais i lan yn gweld effaith wirioneddol, feunyddiol yr anrhaith economaidd a achoswyd i gymunedau Cymru dro ar ôl tro. I ormod o lawer o’m cyfoedion oedd yn prifio yn y 1980au, nid oedd posibilrwydd swydd yn ddim ond breuddwyd bell. A gallwch weld o hyd yr anobaith a grëir gan ddiweithdra wedi ei hoelio i mewn i’r pren oedd dros ffenestri caeedig siopau wedi cau. Heddiw, mae’n atseinio ac yn chwythu o gwmpas lloriau’r ffatrïoedd gwag a’r pyllau glo segur. Rhaid i ni newid hynny. Mae Plaid Cymru yma i roi gobaith i bobl.

Yr awydd i chwythu anadl gobaith i gymunedau fel fy rhai i a’m dygodd i mewn i wleidyddiaeth i gychwyn, a dyna yw fy sbardun hyd y dydd heddiw. Dyma sy’n gyrru fy awydd i weld llywodraeth Plaid Cymru yn 2016. Dyna’r distryw, y dirywiad yr wyf i’n benderfynol o weld ei wrthdroi, ei drawsnewid yn llwyr. Mae gennym botensial enfawr.

A dyna pam fy mod yn cyhoeddi heddiw wrthych mai fy mwriad yw ceisio cael fy newis i sefyll yn etholiad nesaf y Cynulliad fel ymgeisydd dros etholaeth y Rhondda.

Fe wn i, i bobl y Rhondda, nad dyma’r gorau y gallwn gael. Fe wn i y gall Cymru fod yn llwyddiannus ac yn ffyniannus.

Mae economeg a gwleidyddiaeth yn mynd ynghyd.

Allwn ni ond cael yr economeg yn iawn os cawn y wleidyddiaeth yn iawn.

A dyna pam fy mod yn benderfynol mai llywodraeth Plaid Cymru fydd llywodraeth nesaf Cymru.”

Yr oedd yr araith hefyd yn cynnwys amlinelliad o’r pum maes allweddol a nodwyd gan Gomisiwn Economaidd Plaid Cymru, a sefydlwyd gan Ms Wood, ar gyfer hybu’r economi a chreu swyddi.

Dyma hwy:

‘Cysylltu’r Genedl’ fydd yn canolbwyntio ar wella cludiant cyhoeddus, gyda’r Cynulliad Cenedlaethol yn cymryd rheolaeth lawn o fasnachfraint rheilffyrdd Cymru gyfan, gwella rhwydwaith y ffyrdd, defnyddio ein porthladdoedd a chyflwyno band eang cyflym iawn a mynediad at 4G i bawb.‘Ail-leoleiddio’r lleol’ fydd yn gwella lefelau caffael cyhoeddus Cymreig i gloi ein harian i mewn i Gymru a chreu swyddi, gan helpu i gefnogi busnesau lleol.‘Asiantaeth ynni genedlaethol i Gymru’ fyddai’n defnyddio ein hadnoddau er lles y bobl yma, gan fuddsoddi mewn ymchwil a datblygu prosiectau newydd.System ariannol Gymreig fydd yn cynnwys creu Banc Cymru mewn dwylo cyhoeddus i fuddsoddi mewn busnesau bach.Ail-gydbwyso Prydain fydd yn cynnwys datganoli’r system lles a chynyddu cyfran Cymru o gyllidebau caffael y DG i wrthweithio’r anghydbwysedd hanesyddol rhwng cenhedloedd Prydain.

Dywedodd Ms Wood: “Pan gefais i f’ethol yn arweinydd fy mhlaid fe wnes hi’n glir fy mod eisiau fy marnu ar un pwnc ac un pwnc yn unig – yr economi. Yr economi a chreu swyddi fydd fy nghanolbwynt, ac felly y bydd hi wrth i ni anelu at Etholiadau’r Cynulliad nesaf yn 2016 ac fel y byddaf i, a’m plaid, yn datblygu’r rhaglen y byddwn yn ei rhoi ar waith fel llywodraeth nesaf Cymru.

Mae pobl Cymru yn haeddu dim llai na llywodraeth fydd yn gwneud popeth fedr i alluogi ein cenedl i fod mor llwyddiannus a ffyniannus ag y gwn y gall fod.

Ychwanegodd: “Mae Plaid Cymru yn anghytuno’n sylfaenol gyda’r camau a gymerir gan Lywodraeth y DG. Ymhell o wella pethau, mae polisïau Llywodraeth y DG yn gwneud problemau economi Cymru yn waeth.

Mae Cynllun A sy’n creu llymder yn drychinebus i Gymru. Wnaeth pobl Cymru ddim pleidleisio drosto. Mae’r rhan fwyaf o bobl yma yn cefnogi pleidiau sy’n ei wrthod, neu o leiaf yn dweud eu bod ….Ond dyw gwrthod llymder ddim yn ddigon. Rhaid i ni hefyd wrthod y wireb nad oes dewis arall.

I Gymru, rhaid cael dewis arall, ac y mae Plaid Cymru yn llunio rhaglen fydd yn cynnig y dewis arall hwnnw.”

Llwyn yr Eos cut through?

The Cambrian News rang me on Friday asking for a comment regarding a road safety issue. Apparently, the police have been stopping cars who use the access road from Lon Tanyfron to Llwynyreos (access to the school) and giving £30 fine.

I am not aware that there is an ongoing problem in this area, and I doubt whether this saves time as a cut through.

If anybody thinks that this is an ongoing issue, please contact on merbala@hotmail.com.
