CCTV – who should pay?

Some of you may read in the Cambrian News that Aberystwyth Town Council – which is funded by taxpayers of Aberystwyth and Penparcau – object to plans for us to be paying for the CCTV system.

Up to March 2014, Ceredigion County Council were funding £150,000 to the police to pay for the monitoring and maintenance of the system. The council has warned the service will stop if the police refuse to take the reins.

There are 23 town centre CCTV cameras in Ceredigion.

Assistant Chief Constable Pam Kelly said: “Community safety is a priority for Dyfed-Powys Police, and CCTV is an important crime prevention and reassurance tool in our communities.

“In recognition of this, against the backdrop of budget reductions, Ceredigion County Council and Dyfed-Powys Police are discussing what options are available in respect of CCTV for Ceredigion.”

Aberystwyth Town Council are being asked to fund £16,000 for the network and maintenance of the system – if 3 other towns opt into the scheme. Taypayers already contribute to Dyfed Powys Police via the Council Tax precept. We are being asked to contribute twice for the same service. Also, individuals who happen to live in Penparcau postcode have to pay, regardless of the fact that residents of Llanbadarn, Waunfawr and Rhydyfelin do not have to contribute but use the amenities in town.

Even if we pay £16,000, the system will not be monitored. It will record events, but nobody will be watching to be able to respond immediately.

This is regardless of the fact that the Police Commissioner has a budget of £790,000 – £373,000 of this spent on his and his staff’s wages.

Please write to the Cambrian News and bring this to the attention of the public.

  1. I don’t think that it would be fair for the taxpayer to pay for this. Where are the cameras in Aberystwyth and Penparcau?
