Campaign for a safer crossing in Penparcau

Ceredigion’s Plaid Cymru AM Elin Jones has written to the Transport Minister at the Welsh Government to urge the Trunk Roads Agency to investigate whether road safety can be improved on the busy main road in Penparcau.

In the centre of the village, there is currently a traffic island on the main road between the Memorial Hall and St. Anne’s Church. However, the A487 between Southgate and the roundabout at the park in Penparcau is one of the busiest roads in Ceredigion, and residents are concerned about increasing traffic and danger at the site.

Local county councillor Lorrae Jones-Southgate has lobbied for safety improvements at the site, having previously worked with the police and local authority to secure a traffic survey, and has also taken up the issue with the Transport Minister.

Elin Jones, local Plaid Cymru AM for Ceredigion, said,

“This is the natural crossing place for hundreds of residents in Southgate and Penparcau. It’s also widely-used by children walking to school from Piercefield and Maesycrugiau. I’m encouraged by the Welsh Government’s recent willingness to look afresh at road safety at schools which are near trunk roads. Penparcau certainly needs to be addressed, to get the right balance between improving safety and ensuring the flow of traffic in this busy location.”

Lorrae Jones Southgate, county councillor for Penparcau ward, said,

“Looking again at road safety at this site would be of huge benefit to so many people. It’s a very heavily-used crossing place, as it’s right next to the entrance of the Church and the Memorial Hall.

“It’s also the most convenient place for many children to cross to go to school at Llwyn-yr-Eos, and will be used more an more as new homes are developed in places such as Maescrugiau. Traffic is exceptionally busy here.

“It’s time to look again at what can be done to improve safety, and I hope the Minister look into the feasibility of a proper pelican crossing at the site instead of the current traffic island.”

Voting has opened to decide which event will win Farmers Guardian’s Show Business 2014 competition. There is a lot at stake for the seven finalists. The winning show will follow in the footsteps of Mid-Devon and Turriff Shows, and will receive a comprehensive media partnership with Farmers Guardian.

The package will include a show preview in Farmers Guardian, a journalist and photographer attending and reporting on the show, and advertising, including significant social media exposure.

All finalists are working hard to encourage the next generation, are raising money to help local causes, and are also playing a significant part in educating visitors about farming, as well as being key parts of their local community. But who will win?

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-mid-wales-26512351

Cafwyd newyddion da fod deiliad rhandiroedd Min y Ddol yn cael defnyddio’r tir ar gyfer plannu.
Gall garddwyr ddechrau plannu llysiau eto ar rhandir llifogydd. Ddwy flynedd yn ôl, yr oedd pryderon y gallai’r tir fod wedi eu halogi.

Dywedodd Cyngor Sir Ceredigion wrth y 27 o ddeiliaid rhandiroedd ym Mhenparcau, ger Aberystwyth, i beidio â defnyddio’r lleiniau ar ôl Afon Rheidol byrstio ei glannau ym mis Mehefin 2012.

Bu ofnau fod y tir wedi ei halogi gan fetelau trwm, gan gynnwys plwm.

Ond mae adroddiad wedi canfod nad oedd y tir yn llygredig ac yn addas ar gyfer garddio.

Mae’r cyngor yn ysgrifennu at bob un o’r deiliaid rhandiroedd i roi gwybod iddynt.

Canfyddiadau cyffredinol yr adroddiad yn dangos nad yw’r tir rhandir yn cael ei ddosbarthu fel dosbarth halogedig un neu ddau o dir y dosbarth ac yn addas ar gyfer trin y tir barhau”.

Roedd rhannau o ogledd Ceredigion 5 troedfedd ( 1.5m ) o dd?r sefyll, gyda pharciau carafannau, cartrefi a busnesau yn dioddef o effeithiau glaw trwm ar 8 a 9 Mehefin 2012.

Pryderon ynghylch halogiad codi oherwydd meysydd uchod Aberystwyth , gan gynnwys Cwmsymlog , Cwmerfyn a Bancydarren eu cloddio am blwm yn y 18fed a’r 19eg cyn y diwydiant gostwng o tua 1880, yn dod i ben ar ddechrau’r 20fed ganrif .

Dywedodd Cyngor Sir Ceredigion mae canfyddiad yr adroddiad oedd fod nad oedd y tir wedi ei heintio a’i fod yn saff i blannu yno.

CCTV – who should pay?

Some of you may read in the Cambrian News that Aberystwyth Town Council – which is funded by taxpayers of Aberystwyth and Penparcau – object to plans for us to be paying for the CCTV system.

Up to March 2014, Ceredigion County Council were funding £150,000 to the police to pay for the monitoring and maintenance of the system. The council has warned the service will stop if the police refuse to take the reins.

There are 23 town centre CCTV cameras in Ceredigion.

Assistant Chief Constable Pam Kelly said: “Community safety is a priority for Dyfed-Powys Police, and CCTV is an important crime prevention and reassurance tool in our communities.

“In recognition of this, against the backdrop of budget reductions, Ceredigion County Council and Dyfed-Powys Police are discussing what options are available in respect of CCTV for Ceredigion.”

Aberystwyth Town Council are being asked to fund £16,000 for the network and maintenance of the system – if 3 other towns opt into the scheme. Taypayers already contribute to Dyfed Powys Police via the Council Tax precept. We are being asked to contribute twice for the same service. Also, individuals who happen to live in Penparcau postcode have to pay, regardless of the fact that residents of Llanbadarn, Waunfawr and Rhydyfelin do not have to contribute but use the amenities in town.

Even if we pay £16,000, the system will not be monitored. It will record events, but nobody will be watching to be able to respond immediately.

This is regardless of the fact that the Police Commissioner has a budget of £790,000 – £373,000 of this spent on his and his staff’s wages.

Please write to the Cambrian News and bring this to the attention of the public.

Isafswm cyflog / Minimum wage

Mae’r Comisiwn Cyflogau Isel wedi argymell cynnydd o 3% yn yr isafswm cyflog i £6.50 yr awr i oedolion, dywedodd Ysgrifennydd Busnes Vince Cable wrth Aelodau Seneddol. Bydd yr isafswm cyflog yn debygol o gynyddu ar y 1af o Hydref 2014.

Dywedodd Mr Cable fyddai’r cynnydd cyntaf mewn termau real ers 2008 os bydd y llywodraeth yn derbyn y cynnig.

The Low Pay Commission has recommended a 3% increase in the minimum wage to £6.50 an hour for adults, Business Secretary Vince Cable has told MPs.

Mr Cable said it would be the first increase in real terms since 2008 if the government accepts the proposal.

The minimum wgae is likely to raise on the 1st of October 2014.
